Would we be really happy if it were an AI that we sent out into the universe and it made first contact with other intelligences? Would we count that as first contact?

Certainly it’s difficult to think of the Mars rovers as making first contact, but AI, even in its current rudimentary form might be acceptable.

Which makes me wonder, what is contact? Is it simply telling other entities that we exist? Is it a demonstration physical and intellectual of who we are and what we can do and to bring back information about them?
