B. Collins urges me to do so now, but I don’t see it. Man is also nature, and hmm… that’s the right way to bookend that vs.

On Protocols, Wagons, and Associated Acrobatics

Years ago, maybe a decade even, I fell in love with this software called Scrivener. I could never justify buying it because I didn’t actually write. But having that software would represent a little bit of the identity I would like to have, a writer. The Fourth of July long weekend gave me a running start. The plan was to write every day for a month. If I did, I would buy Scrivener. This was going quite well, then I couldn’t write for two days.

The Keel

Tonight we cast our nets
In foreign waters
Now we are new
Tomorrow we’ll belong
Then the sea'll tug and pull
Time to be gone

So, let’s
Kiss the nymphs
Meet the crabs
In their bucket games
Feel their stabs

Our plans are small
But they are spread
A thousand ports
Before we are dead

Maybe it wasn’t necessarily directed at me, but as they say in the, now old, new lingo, I felt attacked. You see, recently, drawing on the well of inspiration that is history I succeeded in writing a poem, but not just any poem. I wrote a ghazal.

Those who know me for any amount of time are made aware of my taste for writing poetry. It’s usually pretty bad but I persist, cause why not. The OG is long gone anyway. The ghazal is an especially ambitious type of poetry to be taken up my someone with my modest talents. To make matters worse, as I learned today, the ghazal is really well suited for the Urdu. For all practical matters, I know only English.

Variations on a grocery run

I.

It’s not fancy, it’s a funky looking, but I was instantly in love. Here it is:

Giant Heart Poetry

It has a syllable counting function and I used it immediately to write (bad) haikus… here are a few:

Life spills. Unraveled.
Collect it all, tick boxes
GTD keeps me
