I’ve been muddling through ways to stay interesting – to myself and friends – in the age of AI. Part of the answer, I have come to understand, is the construction of Thickets. Dreaming up such a thing without a way to traverse it kept the idea incomplete. One nagging thought was that it was important to get properly lost – as opposed to trivially lost. That feeling where you had a good sense of where you were, but a question you asked or a connection you made has left you in unfamiliar territory. Excitingly so.

The legibility regime runs one operation. It converts Space into Place, and everything else it does follows from that.

Space is the undifferentiated field. It holds every possibility and offers no orientation, which is why standing in it feels less like freedom than like vertigo. Draw a boundary around part of it, name what is inside, and you have made a Place. A farm is a Place; beyond the fence is forest. Drawing that boundary is the first act of thought, because you cannot know anything you have not first cut out from everything else. The trouble begins when the operation runs everywhere, on everything, at once, until it stops being thought and becomes weather.

Introduction: The Terror of the Open Field #

We tend to think of “Space” as a vacuum—an emptiness waiting to be filled. But geographically and philosophically, Space is actually a condition of high-entropy potential. As Yi-Fu Tuan famously articulated, space is “freedom,” but it is also “possibility without orientation.” It is the open field where everything is possible, which means nothing is yet distinct.

Last year, while regrouping myself and rebuilding my old curious ways, I had a thought. The common words “spaces” and “places” pass through our minds, fingers, and lips but they deserve a second thought. Unsurprisingly, I wasn’t the first one to consider this and the wealth of reading material helped me write We Need Homes in the Delta Quadrant. Spaces and places have been an enjoyable lens to look through.

Thinking itself is place-making: the act of converting undifferentiated possibility into navigable meaning.

A place comes into being the moment we interrupt undifferentiated space. Place-making is fundamentally an act of interruption. Space is thought of as possibility but is unavailable without the signposts of place. When a place is created we impose a way of looking, being, and acting on the space of choice. The place you pick to navigate your space defines the identity you will inhabit during your quest. Every tool is a micro-place: it frames what can be thought and forecloses alternative moves. They enforce the kind of thoughts that can be had, the type of exploration that can be done, and configures space in an opinionated way.
